Thinking about getting a new guitar?

I have a crappy Starcaster by Fender (not Stratocaster, a guitar of his Cheapo junk that came in a package) just to prove the guitar to see if I like. For me, so I want a new guitar, but I do not know what kind to get. The person who is giving me lessons advised me to get a better guitar and said I should expect to spend 300 or more. I wonder what kind of guitar you should get around at this price. I'm more interested in playing things like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana and David Gilmour, instead of crushing heavy material. Or better yet, if you know of a good place for me to read about the different types of guitars for me to know that on my own, it would be great. I am trying to learn about guitars anyway je.
